The Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream is part of the ENS visa (Employer Nomination Scheme Visa ) (subclass 186) offered by Australia. It’s designed for skilled workers who want permanent residency in Australia and are sponsored by their current employer.

Australian businesses can use this to fill full-time skilled positions with you if they can’t find suitable candidates locally. The position must be on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) with some exceptions. There’s a two-year minimum commitment to the role from the employer.

On the other hand, workers can gain permanent residency in Australia if their employer nominates them, and they meet the criteria. This includes working full-time for the sponsoring employer for at least 3 out of the last 4 years on a specific visa subclass 482 or 457 (not granted under the labour agreement stream).

Nomination by a sponsor – Your sponsor-employer must nominate you to work full-time on your subclass 457 or subclass 482 visa for at least 2 of the 3 years prior to nominating you for the subclass 186 visa (Direct Entry Stream visa). Another nomination that applies here is you were nominated as a scientist, researcher or technical specialist at ANZSCO skill level 1 or 2 by an Australian scientific government agency or Australian university. The employer must also offer an employment contract to the nominated employee.
4. Age requirement – You must be under 45 years of age.
5. English language requirement – Competent English
6. Visa holder – currently be the primary visa holder of either:
   • a subclass 457 visa (any stream)
   • a subclass 482 (TSS) visa (any stream)
   • Bridging visa, A, B or C
7. Health and character requirements – You and any family members who apply for the visa with you must meet the health requirements.. You and family members aged 16 years and over who apply for the visa with you must meet the character requirements.

10. No cancelled visa or refused application – When evaluating your application, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) will take into account your immigration background; therefore, if you have ever had a visa denied or revoked, you may not be eligible for this one.

Do You Have These Documents?

10. Military service records or discharge papers if you served in the armed forces of any country.
11. Partner documents, such as:
    • identity documents
    • character documents.
    • your current marriage certificate or
    • de facto relationship documents – to prove your partner has been in a de facto relationship with you for at least 12 months before you apply:
    • joint bank account statements
    • billing accounts in joint names
    • joint leases or mortgages
    • documents that show you have both lived at the same address.

Dependants Documents

1. Dependants under 18 documents, such as:

1. identity documents (if your child is under 5 years old you can include them in the application without a passport)
2. proof of their relationship with you such as a birth or marriage certificate
3. character documents, if applicable.

2. Dependants over 18 documents, such as:
   • identity documents
   • documents about their other relationships, if applicable
   • character documents
3. Proof of dependence:
   • Form 47a – Details of a child or other dependant family member aged 18 years or over
   • Proof of your relationship with the dependant such as a birth certificate or adoption papers
   • Proof of financial dependence – You must also prove this person has been financially dependant on you for at least 12 months before you apply. You could provide financial documents such as:
   • proof they live with you.
   • their tax records.
   • proof they are currently studying.

Document Preparation Checklist

1. Translate all non-English documents into English.
2. Provide original and translated documents in your application. 
3. Scan or photograph all documents (English and non-English) in colour. The scans and photos must be clear.
